Are your 1:1 leadership discussions yielding the results you desire?
The Leadership team is the lynchpin for growth and change in an organization. As a CEO, your interactions with your leadership team play a crucial role in talent management, execution and ultimately
within your organization. However, you only have so much time in your month, week, and day. It’s time to rethink your approach to these meetings and unlock their full potential.
Start by assessing your Strategic Plan and Yearly Operational Plan (what needs to be accomplished this year?) and your highest value roles to the company (Note: this varies by company). Remember, not all Leaders require the same amount of your time. Also, make sure you factor in time for new leaders to ensure they are productive as quickly as possible.
Your most valuable roles and leaders driving critical initiatives in the yearly plan are the leaders you should meet with most frequently.
This regular cadence ensures that you stay aligned on strategic priorities and address any roadblocks promptly. These leaders certainly can shift from quarter to quarter.
During these meetings, focus on:
- Key agenda items that drive alignment and accountability. Start by reviewing progress against the strategic and yearly plan and addressing any roadblocks that may hinder execution. Utilize tools like the Line of Sight to articulate each leader’s contributions to the strategic and yearly operational objectives.
- Discuss Talent Management. Identify high performers and high potentials within your team and discuss strategies for nurturing their growth and development. Ensure that your organization has a robust succession plan in place to groom future leaders effectively.
- Encourage your leaders to do the things that only they can do. Make sure they delegate tasks efficiently and leverage their team’s strengths to work smarter, not harder.
- Encourage your leaders to allocate at least two hours a week to spend dedicated time “on” the business rather than “in” the business to drive strategic initiatives and foster innovation.
In summary, transforming your 1:1 leadership discussions is a powerful opportunity to elevate leadership effectiveness and drive organizational success. By adopting a structured approach and focusing on strategic alignment, talent management, and efficiency, you can unlock the full potential of your leadership team.
