The Desk is a Terrible Place to View the World: Broadening Leadership Perspectives

As a leader, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations and decision-making processes that keep you chained to your desk. However, a desk is a terrible place to view the world. To truly understand and drive your organization forward, it’s essential to step out and engage directly with your employees, customers, and key stakeholders within your industry.

The Importance of Real-World Interactions

Staying confined to your desk limits your perspective and isolates you from the real-world experiences that shape the business. Engaging directly with employees, customers, and key stakeholders can provide invaluable insights into their direction, motivations, challenges, and potentially how your organization could help.

Connecting with Your Team

  • Walk the Halls: Regularly walking through different departments helps you stay connected with your team. These interactions can reveal operational inefficiencies, morale issues, and opportunities for improvement that you might not otherwise notice. If employees are mostly remote, have your assistant schedule “skip level” 30-minute zoom calls occasionally with employees to check in.  If you have a concentration of employees in one area, this is a great opportunity to pull them together.
  • Hold Open Forums: Encourage open dialogue by holding forums where employees can voice their concerns, share ideas, and ask questions. This fosters a culture of transparency and inclusivity.

Understanding Your Customers

  • Customer Visits: Make it a priority to visit customers and see how they interact with your products or services. Understanding their pain points and preferences firsthand can inform your strategic decisions and remove customer friction with how you do business.
  • Feedback Loops: Establish robust feedback mechanisms that allow customers to share their experiences. Use this feedback to refine your offerings and enhance the customer journey.
  • Customer Advisory Councils: Depending on your size, this is a great way to garner strategic insight with decision-makers semi-annually.  This is extremely effective if done well but a caution, you have to be committed to managing these or reach out to me, I have a partner who is excellent at running these.

Engaging with Key Stakeholders in the Industry

  • Establish Relationships with Key Stakeholders / Key Opinion Leaders that Influence Your Industry: This is a great way to establish partnerships as well as find future board members.
  • Attend Industry Events: Participating in conferences, trade shows, and networking events keeps you informed about industry trends and innovations. These events provide opportunities to learn from peers and competitors and to identify new business opportunities.
  • Thought Leadership: Set a plan for you as well as your leadership team to contribute to industry discussions by writing articles, speaking at events, or participating in panels. This positions you as a thought leader and helps you stay connected with the broader business community.

Broadening your perspective beyond the desk is crucial for effective leadership. By engaging directly with your employees, customers, and stakeholders within your industry, you gain the insights necessary to drive innovation and growth.

Remember, the world outside your office is full of opportunities waiting to be discovered.
